It was once a valuable source of food, building materials, weapons, and inspiration for Maori who, it is believed, also used the patterns to tattoo (moko). This native NZ tree fern product is hand made in New Zealand. The spectacular pattern is completely natural. Each circular pattern shows where a fern frond grew on the tree. Once the outer fibrous bark is removed. The peices are then shaped and dried to make them suitable for export. The kiln drying process used to cure the wood intensifies the natural colours and enhances the tecture.

These unique Kaleidoscopes are made from New Zealand Kauri that has been recovered from peat swamps where it has been undisturbed for more than 30,000 years.
Geological action buried successive forests of these huge trees (some weighing as much as 100 tonnes in their entirety).
The nature of the peat swamp was such that the trees were preserved, some in near perfect condition, the wood acquiring a unique colour and texture.
Extensive independent radio carbon dating tests have shown beyond any doubt that these kauri forests grew during the period 30,000 to more than 50,000 years ago.
